This wonderful seedling is a true spider and measures 4.3 to 1 ratio. It is also pod and pollen fertile. I could not get a good picture of this seedling in 2010, but I remembered that it was thin, so it got moved to a better location.
Now that I know that Whip City Lisa Diana is making Spiders I have already started to use it. One of the crosses that I made this year is with seedling # 06-304.

This seedling is a sib to # 06-304. So far it has not shown very much potential, but in all honesty, it was in a very poor location and not in as much sun as it's sib. This year, 2012, will be it's true test because it has been in the best possible location ever for two (2) years.
It is very important for your seedlings to be in a good location with plenty of water and good nutrients. In my opinion, you want to see what your seedling will do for you in the shortest amount of time. I'm at an age where I want to see quicker what is to come of that seedling rather than waiting five (5) years or better so that I can make the decision of keeping that seedling and using it to it's maximum potential or letting that seedling go.

It is nice to know that Whip City Slinky Slide '09 will give up it's color and hopefully will give to it's children, the wonderful branching and bud count that it possesses, passed on from it's parent Whip City Oopsie ''10.
I love this seedling mainly at present because of it's size, color and texture. This is the first year it bloomed in 2011. I like to give a UFO seedling two (2) years to bloom. It has been selected and replanted, so it will now take a few years to show me what was passed down from it's parents as far as branching and bud count go.

Both seedling # 06-196 and Whip City Tizzie '11 have shown instant rebloom. I am trying to bring out instant rebloom in my seedlings so that we, in a colder Northern climate, can have extended bloom in our daylilies. This seedling may be crossed in 2012 with Whip City Fancy Free ''09 because even though it was not registered with the AHS as a rebloomer, it has shown me that when we get a good Spring rain, it will send up scapes soon after the first scapes have begun to bloom which is what happens with instant rebloom. Whip City Squiglie '10 would be another one to cross it to because it was registered with instant rebloom. Pod Fertile

This deep rose colored seedling is showing a lovely waterrmark and I would have to attribute this to Astral Voyager. When using a daylily like Astral Voyager in your hybridizing program, because it is a lavender, it will help to clear up color, but that is not what I was going for here. I was going for a lighter color with a very good bud count. In 2012, if I set pod on this seedling with another daylily or seedling that is lighter, I should get lighter colored seedlings. I'm thinking seedling #06-304 that is a nine (9) inch flower might just do the trick and because # 06-304 has Tet Skin Walker in the background, it may just thin this seedling and elongate it out more. You can find Ter Skin Walker in Orchid Waterfall as it was one of the parents.

Put two (2) parents together that do plenty of twisting and curling and this is what you can get. As you can see the coloration from Whip City Curly Q was passed along and also the size from Frankies Fantasy that is the pod parent of Whip City Curly Q '08. The genes for a lighter color are there in the background. The next step with this one would be to set pod on it using seedling # 09-117. The parents of both seedlings are different, but the results could produce more enhancement of the watermark. Your guess is as good as mine and the surprise will probably blow me away. When I see a seedling that looks this good, sometimes it is hard for me to imagine something better. Sometimes it takes me a few years to set pod on it till the right seedling comes along, but this time # 09-117 seems to fit the bill perfectly.

Making a new color in your hybridizing program is what it is all about if you are limited as I was. I had put my money into purchasing Red Suspenders and then began to cross it with anything that even resembled a UFO.
Whip City Flighty Tighty '07 has Frankies Fantasy (purple), Decatur Dictator (purple with an eye) and Red Suspenders (red) in it.
Whip City Dapper Dan '11 has Red Suspenders (red) and Risen Star ( pale yellow to cream color) in it.
This would be a cross where Red Suspenders was in both the pod and the pollen parent. I like to call this affectionately kissing cousins but in reality it is actually step sisters or step brothers.
What is making the color change from a red or a purple is Whip City Dapper Dan '11 and that has Risen Star in it. Just a note, when I made the cross for Dapper Dan, 3 of the seedlings were the same color and were actually dogs. You may not get a keeper from a mixed cross, but you will be surprised as to what you will get.

Tall, this is what this seedling is all about. It also possesses branching, good color that holds on a hot day with a nice bud count for a 2010 seedling. In the next couple of years, it will be evaluated. Hopefully there will be more movement to the flower because as it stands, it is just a very large flower and does not comply with the Unusual Forms Definitions.

This is a bad picture of me, I was looking into the sun, but I wanted to show how tall this 2010 seedling is blooming for the first year in 2011. I am 61 inches tall, so you can see that this seedling is up there in height. My estimate would be about 55 inches tall.

I love looking at seedling pictures and seeing the parents along with it. Gives me an idea as to what genes went with what genes. I would love to say that I know exactly what seedling I will be crossing this to in 2012, but to tell you the truth, in 2012 when I see the 2011 seedlings bloom, I will be like a bee in the garden and just have fun.
Frozen pollen in kept in the freezer. It does last for years. I use frozen pollen more in the beginning and the end of the bloom season when there is not as much of a selection of daylilies or other seedlings to choose from for pollen dabbing. In order to be able to see a visual of what is available in frozen pollen, I drop a picture of the flower or seeding of all pollen that is frozen in the freezer into a file and print off an entire sheet of thumb nail pictures. The number of the seedling or the name of the daylily is printed under the picture automatically. Makes my life easier to match a seedling to frozen pollen.

Parents in this seedling consist of Star of India, Cameroon Lights, Red Hurricane, United We stand, Red Tailed Hawk and Megatron.
A very good friend of mine and fellow hybridizer, Richard Blanchard, brought this seedling home from a visit to Jamie Gossard's garden. When it bloomed in his garden, he brought a flower to my house and we went around the garden and put pollen on just about everything that was blooming that day. I had over twenty crossed take in 2010 and this is just one of the seedlings # 10-293 that bloomed this summer of 2011.

This seedling in my humble opinion is just a wonderful Crispata, pinched UFO. Heavenly Dragon Fire just passes on the color orange even though the original cross, Whip City Slinky Slide '09, is a yellow. Both Erlo and Whip City Slinky Slide '09 have wonderful branching and bud count and are tall, so I am hoping that those traits are passed on to this seedling. It will take a few years to see if that is so since it was moved to an evaluation bed Sept. 2011.

Loved this seedling when it bloomed. The color of the flower, the large throat and the lavender halo make this flower just beautiful in my eyes. The pod parent seedling # 06-304 did not show any twisting or curling on it's first years bloom. Maybe, like it's pod parent, in the next year this seedling will show more movement.

When you look at this seedling and the pod parent, the only thing that I see different is the throat. Not as green as either parent. Maybe next year, a sib will give me what I am looking for and this seedling will be discarded.
My numbering system on the labels is different than most, the numbers represent the parents in the cross.
Example: 1 (Red Suspenders) 4 (Chicago Royal) 48 (Brooklyn Twist) 58 (Galaxy Rose). The number under the seedling number 10-426 would read 1-4-48-58. When I go to hybridize, I write down the pollen parent's numbers on the tag and then I try not to duplicate those numbers in the pod parent unless I am looking for something from a particular parent or grandparent that I want to be passed on.

This lovely rose red seedling caught my eye when it bloomed this past 2011 Summer. Pod Fertile.
Since I plant my seedlings 4 inches apart, seedlings that bloom the following year are selected and moved to an observation bed to be evaluated. I will give all the 2010 seedlings selected 2 (two) years to show me what they can do. The rest of the original 2010 seedlings in the seedling bed have one more year to bloom. If any other seedling catches my eye, they too will be selected for evaluation and the rest will be composted. In the beginning when I first started to hybridize, I had to learn what to look for in a seedling and I also had to give the seedlings more time to show me what they could do for that same reason. It has taken some powerful persuasion from fellow hybridizers like Charmaine Rich, and Mark Labbe to choose the best and compost the rest. I believe they choose in one year and what that has given them is vigor and also some gorgeous flowers. Mark Labbe hybridizes for edges and Charmaine Rich hybridizes for sculped daylilies. I am still giving my seedlings 2 (two) years because of the UFO aspects. I still believe that large flowers sometimes take an extra year to bloom. Maybe in time, I too will only give my seedlings one year.

This first year seedling bloomed in 2011 and is an EMO (early morning opener). The flower is smaller than I would like, but two (2) of it's grandparents are of the round form. Jane Trimmer wrote a wonderful article for the AHS Journal that just came out Vol. 66 No. 3 * Fall, 2011. In it she says, "Basically, I take spiders and unusual forms and make bridge plants by crossing with Dan's colorful, full-form and long-petaled tetraploids. Once I get the bright colors or patterns that I want, I again cross back to these seedlings with spiders and unusual form daylilies." I know that this method works because I have been doing this for years. In 1996 when I first started to hybridize for tetraploid UFO and Spiders, there was not much out there that was cold hardy and pod fertile, so new seedlings had to be created to be able to work with a larger gene pool. It has taken longer than expected, but the seedlings that are being created, are just wonderful and loaded with all kinds of genetics. I believe that is why I am always surprised when a seedling blooms and I look to see who the parents are.

When this seedling bloomed in 2011, I was very excited. This Spatulate UFO has a wonderful eye pattern, green throat and the color is a very pale yellow at the center of the petals and sepals blending to a light cream as the color progresses out to the edges. Many of the characteristics of the pollen parent, Sonic Duck, came through, but with a more subtle look like the pod parent. Pollen fertile.

Notice the deeper halo on the petals and the sepals have the same color as the petals, only lighter, almost like being brushed on. The seedling that Melanie gave me wasn't much to look at and it was short, but the kids that have come out of those genetics have been wonderful. I believe I have thanked Melanie more than once for her kindness, but one more time won't hurt. Thanks Melanie!

Since these seedlings are only 1 year old, they are not showing me that I have accomplished this, but hopefully by the summer of 2011, the results will be in.

The sibling # 09-74 to me is very appealing. Not only does it pinch, have a little bit of ruffling, but it is also a "Bicolor.

The petals and sepals are of a totally different color, i.e., red and yellow with the sepals being lighter in shade or color value. In a Reverse Bicolor, the sepals are the darker color and the petals are lighter." 1

# 08-401 (TECHNY SPIDER X WEBSTER'S PINK WONDER) is a real beauty where the color is concerned. If you look closely, there is also a faint pencil line of a deeper pink coloration. This is not a large daylily, but it is wonderful with the petals pinching and the sepals quilling making this a UFO, CRISPATE.

# 08-403 is a sibling to # 08-401 and notice the difference not only in color, but in form. # 08-403 is also a UFO, but it is a SPATULATE. There is pollen on the left petal. This would have been caused by the wind and the petal is strong because it did not break when it was bent by the wind..

Curiosity was in the making of this baby and many others in the year 2008. That is why you are seeing seedlings with WEBSTER'S PINK WONDER as the pollen parent. As you can see the results have been unbelievable as far as different colors resulting from these crosses. This color on this seedling held up very nicely even in 100 degree weather.
40 inches tall.

I have used it again and again. WHIP CITY TIZZIE '11 introduction has ASTRAL VOYAGER as the pod parent. Since lavender helps to clear up color, it is an excellent choice to use in your hybridizing program. Pollen fertile 40 inches tall.

I was looking to incorporate eyes in my seedlings and I would have to say I have succeeded. Pod Fertile If you read the article written by Tom Rood on hybridizing found at:

Tom points out that the second generation (F2) will give you what you are looking for, so don't throw out those first year seedling (F1) just because you did not get what you were looking for on that first cross. It's there, you just have to keep hybridizing for it to show up.

A good friend of mine Jim Wuersch from 5-Acre Farm Daylilies, www.5acrefarmdaylilies.com ask me about the purples and lavender colors that I was getting with my crosses. I remembered that Munson and Marsh had a lot to do getting purples to be sun hardy and when you look into the background of many of my crosses, you will find that information to be true. This seedling is such a dark purple that the picture could be taken in the sun and you can still see the density of the color.

2010 was the first year that I have seen these seedling ('08 & '09) bloom.

Sib. # 08-25 24 inches tall. Pollen fertile.

WHIP CITY SLINKY WALK '09 is the pod parent.

WEBSTER'S PINK WONDER is the pollen parent. I have never been able to set pod on this wonderful flower, so in 2007, I set pod on anything that took the pollen from WEBSTER'S PINK WONDER just to see what would happen. The color results were amazing and the size of the blooms were just outstanding. I also found out that if you put WEBSTER'S PINK WONDER on a tall daylily, most of the kids come out tall.

There was an attempt on my part to try to thin out the petals, but as you can see the look took on the look of the pollen parent more than the look of the pod parent. The pod parent has measured at 9 inches and is quite thin. I am planning on crossing these seedlings to # 06-304 this year. Since it has Tet SKIN WALKER in it's background, hopefully, we will get more thinness in the petals. This cross is what I like to call kissing cousins, but in actuality they are step brothers and step sisters meaning that one of the original parents is in both of the backgrounds. These seedlings have ORCHID WATERFALL in the background and seedling # 06-304 does also. It just amazes me to see such a difference when you are looking at the sibs # 08-303, # 08-305 and this one. The colors on the petals are a hot tangerine and the sepals are a much cooler and lighter tangerine in the same color range, making this a bitone. The sepals are displaying a nice white edge. The green throat bounces off of the hot tangerine color and there is a white midrib radiating from the throat to the tips of the petals giving the effect of a fold line.

Seedling # 08-263 is a sibling to # 08-262. Not all seedling of the UFO variety will be exactly as it should be the first year it blooms. I have seen where it doesn't come to full potential until a few years later. Pod fertile. 44 inches tall 2011.

This Summer, 2010, showed some exquisite daylilies in the 2008 and 2009 seedling beds. These seedlings bloomed for the first time and were the results of years of hybridizing. Hopefully you will enjoy them as much as I have. The 2008 seedlings had been in the ground for two (2) years and the 2009 seedlings had been in the ground for only one (1) year. # 09-252 and # 09-253 showed a lovely flower, but also exhibited vigor, branching and bud count. The results have been amazing and my 2008 seedlings that bloomed this year, 2010, just blew my mind and made me dance in the garden.

What a surprise seedling # 06-214 was when it bloomed for the first time. It's parents are (SEARS TOWER X ORCHID WATERFALL). As you can see by the intense dark red coloration, SEARS TOWER gave up it's color. It also measured at 9 inches as it stood and qualified as a spider. It is also pod and pollen fertile and it is giving me some great kids. To qualify as a spider, the longest petal is unfurled and measured from the tip to the V where the flower petals & sepals connect at the base of the flower. Then the widest part of the petal is measured. The width is divided into the length and if it comes out at 4:1 ratio or better, then it is deemed a spider. What is nice is when you have friends who choose to share pollen with you. HEAVENLY DRAGON FIRE's pollen was given to me and there have been excellent results as far as the intensity of color. HEAVENLY DRAGON FIRE's orange color is dominant.

I'd like to take a moment to tell you about two really great places to purchase daylilies.

The first one is Harmon Hill Farm, NH. http://www.harmonhillfarm.com/
Carl and Marlene Harmon have been selling and shipping hardy northern daylilies for many years now. They have done much to promote northern hybridizers, Region 4, as well as selling great plants. They are honest and generous people. If you need a daylily, give them a try. One of my intros is called BIG HONKING CARL '10. Need I say more.

In 2012, Carl and Marlene will be selling some of my extra introductions.
There is not much room here at Knoll Cottage. My property is on .15 of an acre, so space is at a premium.

The second source for daylilies is Rock Haven Daylilies, ME http://rockhavendaylilies.com/wordpress/ Lisa and Paul Bourret also have done much for northern hybridizers as well as Region 4 and they too sell and ship wonderful plants. Living up in ME can be a challenge for people as well as daylilies. Give them a try and you will not be disappointed.

This seedling was under evaluation. It is a marvelously colored daylily with a pink to a rose color. This particular seedling came back to me from Deb Carpenter's garden and was evaluated, and lined out and registered with the American Hemerocallis Society. http://www.daylilies.org/ Deb's garden is called Day Dream hence the name. Deb's garden is very lovely and intricately woven. Always something new with every turn.

Whip City Cuddly Kitty '12 - Seedling # 04-11

Whip City Cuddly Kitty '12 - # 04-11 bloomed beautifully this year. It is a cross of [BIMINY TWIST X Melanie Mason Sldg.(KING GEORGE x TROPIC SUNSET)] The color is a clear, intense cherry red and the edges of the sepals are enhanced by a thin white edge that is more prevalent on the bottom of the sepal than on the top so with the sepals curling you actually see more white than if the sepals were straight out. With everything this seedling has to offer, makes 04-11 a winner in my book.

From time to time, I will be posting pics of my seedlings to show you what I have experienced during the summer months. This past summer has been what I have been working for. The colors are so varied and the sizes of these daylilies has been unbelievably large, well over 8 inches.
